As someone who grew up in a rural area in the 1980s, comic stores were not something I frequented. The nearest store was nearly 60 miles away from my little town of 200 people. I did have the pleasure of reading some comics. Be it comics that family members gave to me or maybe a friend picked up a handful at a flea market. What was missing though, was continuity. There was no real way for me to read entire storylines and really absorb the plot. This really was a barrier for my comic book journey.
The first store I visited was a major comic retailer in NYC at the age of 24. I was amazed at the variety and sheer quantity of options available. It was a far cry from the handful of Double Digests I would see at the local pharmacy. I couldn't help but wonder about the amount of stories I missed as a kid. Such well woven tails, the satisfaction of completing a run, the pride I could take in having that really rare first appearance.
